Working around a septic field and a well
A drainfield is a shallow, fragile, expensive thing under a lawn that looks like any other lawn. Machine traffic across it is one of the few clearing mistakes that can render a house uninhabitable, and it happens because nobody marked it.

The short answer
Find the system before the machine arrives. Records may exist with the county health department or the original installer, the tank lid and inspection ports are often locatable, and a septic contractor can locate a field without excavating it.
Then keep weight off it. Drainfield trenches sit shallow and depend on undisturbed soil structure to work; compaction across them can reduce or stop their function, and repairing that is a replacement rather than a fix.
A wellhead is a smaller target and a more serious one, because damage to a well casing or a buried supply line is a contamination question as well as a repair question. Mark it, fence it if the machine will be nearby, and keep the route away from it.
What none of this platform can tell you is where your system is, what setbacks apply where you live, or whether a particular activity near a well is permitted. Those are county health department and state agency questions.

- How the access route relates to the field and the wellhead
- Whether tree roots have already reached the field or the lines
- Whether the machine can reach the work without crossing either

The locate sequence, in order
Do this before pricing rather than before starting, because it may change the access route and therefore the price.
- Ask the county health department or environmental health office whether a permit record exists
- Look for the tank lid, inspection ports, and any cleanout in the lawn
- Have a septic contractor locate the field if the records are absent or unclear
- Locate the wellhead, and establish where the supply line runs to the house
- Mark all of it physically — stakes, tape, cones — so it reads from a cab
- Show the marking to the contractor and agree the travel route around it
Why a drainfield fails from being driven on
A conventional drainfield works by letting effluent disperse through soil that has air spaces in it. Compaction closes those spaces.
It is not a dramatic failure. The field does not break; it stops absorbing at the rate it was designed for, and the symptoms appear weeks or months later as slow drainage, wet ground, or a backup. By then the connection to a machine that crossed it in April is not obvious to anyone.
Shallow trenches also sit close enough to the surface that heavy weight can crush or displace the distribution pipe itself. Neither outcome is repairable by re-levelling the lawn.
Trees, roots, and the reason the clearing came up in the first place
Many owners are clearing precisely because growth has established over or near a field, and roots seeking water and nutrients in a drainfield are a real and well-documented nuisance.
Removing the growth is reasonable. How it is removed is the question: grinding or mulching above grade leaves the roots in place and disturbs nothing, while pulling stumps out of a drainfield risks tearing up the distribution pipe along with the root plate.
This is one of the clearer cases where an above-ground method is the right answer even though roots are the problem, and where the follow-up belongs to a septic contractor rather than a clearing crew.
The machine and the route
Once the systems are marked, the constraint is geometry: can the machine reach the work without crossing either?

What to write down
Two sentences in the scope cover most of the risk: no machine traffic within the marked drainfield area, and a stated standoff from the wellhead maintained throughout.
Add who repairs what if either is crossed. Not as a threat — as the thing that makes the marking matter to everyone on site, including a subcontractor who arrives on day two and was not at the walk-through.

Questions people actually ask
How far should machinery stay from a wellhead?
Required setbacks are set by state and county rules and differ substantially, so no distance published nationally would be reliable. Your county health department can tell you what applies, and it is worth asking before the work rather than after.
Can a drainfield recover from being driven on?
Compaction in the soil around drainfield trenches is slow to recover and may not recover to the design rate at all. It is best treated as a permanent consequence rather than something time will fix.
Should I remove trees growing over my drainfield?
Reducing the growth above grade is commonly sensible where roots are interfering. Excavating roots out of a field risks the distribution pipe, so the root question belongs to a septic contractor rather than a clearing crew.
What if I cannot find any record of the system?
A septic contractor can usually locate a tank and field without excavation. That is the point at which the small cost of a locate is clearly worth it, because working blind over an unmarked field is the scenario this whole page exists to prevent.
