How close to the house can machines work?

The short answer
For low brush, a machine can typically work close to a wall, because nothing being cut is tall enough to reach the structure and the operator has full control of the head.
For anything of height, the governing distance is what the stem can reach if it goes the wrong way, plus a margin. That distance can exceed the height of the growth, and it is a safety judgement for the contractor rather than a number an owner should specify.
The way to reduce the standoff is to change the method rather than to push the machine closer. Sectional removal from above, hand cutting, or a tree service taking the height off before the clearing crew arrives all allow work nearer a structure than a machine alone can.
What is worth protecting explicitly: glass, gutters, downpipes, external units, meter boxes, and anything mounted on a wall. These are commonly damaged by debris rather than by the machine touching the building.

Changing the method rather than the distance
When growth is too close for a machine to handle safely, the productive move is to split the job.
A tree service can remove height in sections from above, working with ropes and rigging, so nothing large ever falls. Once the height is down, the remaining stump and low growth is well within a machine’s comfortable range. Two trades, two visits, and a result no single machine could achieve.
On smaller growth, hand cutting the last few feet next to a wall is often quicker than any attempt to manoeuvre a machine into position, and it is what a sensible crew will propose.
What owners should point out and protect
The damage that happens on residential lots is rarely the machine hitting the house. It is debris, and it is preventable.
- Windows, glazed doors, and conservatory panels — cover or agree a working direction
- Gutters, downpipes, and fascia boards, which are easily caught by falling material
- Air conditioning units, heat pumps, and external plant
- Meter boxes, external taps, and vents

The ground next to a foundation
A less obvious consideration: heavy machinery working immediately adjacent to a foundation applies load close to it, and on some soils and some structures that matters.
This is not a general prohibition and it is not something an owner can assess. What is reasonable is to raise it — particularly on older buildings, on shallow foundations, near basement walls, or where the ground is soft.
Where there is genuine doubt about a structure, that is a question for a qualified engineer rather than for a clearing contractor, and it is worth recognising before rather than after.
What a quote should say about it
Two things belong in writing: the standoff the contractor intends to maintain from each structure, and what happens to the growth inside that standoff.
The second is the part that gets missed. A quote that clears to within a stated distance of the house has left growth against the wall, and if you expected that to be handled, you needed a second line in the scope.
Walk the perimeter of every structure with the contractor and agree what happens in each stretch. It takes ten minutes and it removes the most common source of disappointment on residential clearing.
