On recreational land, clearing is a design job disguised as a machine job. The same number of acres opened in a different shape produces completely different results, and the shape is decided by whoever holds the controls unless the owner decides it first.

The short answer
Wildlife use edges — the transition between open ground and cover — far more than they use the middle of either. A given acreage cleared as several narrow openings creates far more edge than the same acreage cleared as one block.
Sightlines are a separate design problem and frequently conflict with the first. A lane straight enough to see along is a lane that anything using it can also see along, and curved or offset openings behave differently from straight ones.
Access is the third layer, and it is the one that determines whether the work lasts. An opening you cannot reach without walking through the area you are trying to keep undisturbed has a use problem no amount of clearing fixes.
What none of this is: a habitat management plan. Species behaviour, planting, and timing are regional questions for a state wildlife or forestry agency, and this page is about the geometry rather than the biology.

Shape changes the outcome more than area does
Take a fixed area and clear it four different ways. The acreage on the invoice is identical and the result is not.

Designing before the machine arrives
The practical method costs an afternoon and a roll of flagging tape.
Start from where the land is used from — a stand, a cabin, a gate, a lane. Walk from there, and mark where you actually want to be able to see, where you want cover to remain, and where you need to travel. Then mark the openings on the ground rather than describing them on a map.
Two things usually change once it is flagged. Openings turn out to be in the wrong place relative to the approach, and the wind on a typical morning turns out to run the wrong way across a planned opening. Both are cheap to fix with tape and expensive to fix afterwards.
The maintenance question that decides the plan
Every opening on wooded land is temporary. Left alone it closes, and the rate depends on the site.
That makes annual maintenance capacity the real constraint on the design. An owner with a tractor and a mower can maintain a lane network. An owner who will visit twice a year cannot, and will get a better long-term result from fewer, larger openings that take longer to close.
Being honest about this at the design stage is what prevents the common outcome: an ambitious network cleared in one season, half-maintained in the second, and indistinguishable from the surrounding cover by the fifth.
Where clearing interacts with water and slope
Openings and lanes concentrate water. A lane running straight down a slope becomes a drainage channel, and on erodible soil it can become a gully in a couple of wet seasons.
Laying lanes across the slope rather than down it, breaking long runs, and leaving vegetated strips where water crosses are all standard practice and all easier to specify before the work than to retrofit.
Where a lane or opening approaches a watercourse, wetland, or drainage feature, the constraints stop being aesthetic. What to hand the contractor
Recreational clearing is one of the few cases where an owner genuinely knows something the contractor cannot: what the land is for.
The handover is simple. Flag the openings and lanes, walk them with the contractor, state which edges should be left ragged rather than straight, and say whether the intention is to maintain the network annually. An operator who understands the purpose makes better decisions in the hundred small cases the marking does not cover.

Questions people actually ask
Will this page tell me how wide to make a lane?
No. Useful width depends on purpose, terrain, machine, and what you want the lane to do, and a national figure would be invented. What is portable is that you should decide width from purpose and then check the machine can work it.
Is more edge always better?
More edge creates more transition, which is generally the point on recreational land. It also creates more maintenance and more boundary against reinvading growth, so the optimum is bounded by what you will actually keep up.
Can I clear openings near a creek?
That depends on jurisdiction, which varies by location and cannot be determined from a national page. Work near waters and wetlands may require authorisation; the Corps of Engineers district office covering your area is the place to ask.
Who decides the final shape, me or the operator?
You should, because you know the purpose. In practice the operator makes hundreds of small decisions the marking does not cover, which is why walking the flagged plan together is worth more than a written specification alone.
