Thinning removes some stems so the remainder do better. What "better" means — growth rate, habitat value, or a view — changes which stems come out, and the three objectives frequently conflict.

The short answer
Thinning for growth removes competitors so the retained stems get more light, water, and root space. The stems that come out are the ones suppressing better neighbours.
Thinning for habitat removes stems to create structural variety — gaps, edges, layers, and deadwood. It deliberately retains things a timber operation would remove.
Thinning for sightlines removes whatever is in the way, which may be the healthiest stems on the property.
These are genuinely different operations. Deciding which one you want before anyone marks a tree is the whole of the planning.

Why gradual beats aggressive
The most common thinning error is taking too much at once, and the consequence arrives in the first winter.
Stems that grew in a closed stand developed in mutual shelter. Their trunks have less taper and their root plates are adapted to shared conditions. Open the canopy substantially and the remaining stems face wind loading they never had to resist.
The result can be losses among exactly the trees you were trying to favour. Thinning in stages over years gives the retained stems time to respond — thickening their trunks and extending anchorage — before the next reduction.
This argues for a lighter first entry than instinct suggests, particularly on exposed ground and with species known locally to be shallow-rooted or brittle.
When material has value, and when it does not
Whether thinning costs you money or produces some is entirely a function of what comes out and where you are.
Stems of merchantable size and species, on ground a harvesting operation can reach, may have value that offsets part of the operation. Small-diameter stems, poor form, mixed species, or difficult access generally do not — the handling cost exceeds the material worth.
Because most thinning-for-growth removes exactly the suppressed, poorly formed stems, the material is frequently the least valuable on the property. That is not a reason to avoid it; it is a reason to expect the operation to be a cost rather than an income.
Where genuine timber value may exist, that is a forestry question, and a consulting forester or your state forestry agency is the right source. This platform does not assess timber value.
Protected stems, and why nobody here can rule on them
Local tree protection is real, varies enormously, and is not something that can be resolved from a national resource.
Some jurisdictions regulate removal of trees above a certain size, of certain species, in certain zones, or within a distance of a watercourse. Some require a permit for removal of any tree above a threshold on a residential lot. Some regulate nothing.
This platform does not and cannot determine the status of any tree on your property. The check is with your local planning or code office before stems are marked, because marking is cheap and unmarking is not.
The same applies to protected wildlife. Where nesting or roosting may be present, timing restrictions may apply, and those come from your state wildlife agency.
Marking, and why the plan has to be physical
A thinning plan that exists only in conversation will not survive contact with a working crew, and the losses are not recoverable.
Whoever decides which stems come out has to mark them on the ground, in a scheme everybody understands — one colour for removal, another for retention, and a written note of which is which so it cannot be misremembered halfway through.
Marking also forces the decisions to be made deliberately, walking the stand, rather than improvised by an operator working to a description. That is where most of the value of a thinning plan actually comes from.
Where the objective is habitat, mark the retentions rather than the removals. Standing deadwood, cavity stems, and understorey patches are exactly the features a production-minded crew removes by default, so they need to be visibly protected rather than merely mentioned.

Questions people actually ask
How many trees should come out?
It depends on current stocking, species, site, and your objective, which is why a national figure would be meaningless. A consulting forester or your state forestry agency can assess a stand; a website cannot.
Can mulching equipment thin a stand?
It works well for removing small-diameter competitors and understorey selectively. Larger stems are beyond the economical range of a head and need felling. Many thinning operations use both.
Will thinning make my trees grow faster?
Reducing competition for light, water, and root space generally improves growth of the retained stems, which is the whole premise. How much depends on species, age, and site, and the response takes years rather than months.
Should I remove the dead trees?
For a timber objective, usually. For habitat, standing deadwood is among the most valuable structure on a property and is deliberately retained. Near a target it becomes a safety question instead. The answer follows your objective.
