Why reclaimed pasture reverts
A paddock cleared in spring can look finished by summer and be halfway back to brush by the following autumn. The clearing was rarely the problem. What failed was everything that was supposed to happen in the twelve months afterwards, and usually nobody had decided who owned it.

The short answer
Reversion is the default. Woody growth on ground that used to be pasture is there because grazing or cutting stopped, and cutting it once removes the visible part while leaving the root systems, the seed bank in the soil, and the seed source on adjoining land untouched.
The single most useful thing an owner can do is decide, before clearing, what happens in the first twelve months. Competitive ground cover established quickly is what holds a reclamation; bare disturbed soil is an invitation.
Soil condition matters more than most owners expect. Compaction from machine traffic, topsoil dragged into piles, and a thick residue layer all affect whether forage establishes, and all of them are consequences of choices made during the clearing.
None of the specifics — which species, what rate, what timing, what soil amendment — can be answered nationally. Those are extension-service and NRCS questions, and they depend on your soil, your climate, and your intended stock.

The four reasons a reclamation reverts
They compound. A project usually fails for two or three of these at once, which is why single fixes disappoint.

The clearing decisions that decide the outcome
By the time you are seeding, most of the outcome has already been determined. Three choices during the clearing carry the weight.
Whether material is gathered with a toothed rake or lifted with a grapple decides how much topsoil ends up in a pile rather than on your paddock. Whether the ground is worked wet or dry decides how compacted it is. And whether the residue is left thick or spread thin decides how easily anything establishes through it.
These are all reasonable things to raise before pricing. A contractor who knows the ground is going into forage will often work differently, and will tell you what they can and cannot do about it.
The twelve-month plan, and who owns each part
This is the document that distinguishes a reclamation from a clearing. It does not need to be long.

Where to get the agronomy
Species selection, seeding rates, timing, and soil amendment are local technical questions with real consequences, and no national page can answer them responsibly.
University cooperative extension services publish forage guidance for their states and answer landowner enquiries. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service provides technical conservation assistance through local field offices and publishes soil survey information covering most rural land. Both are the appropriate first stop, and both are free.
A clearing contractor is not the right source for this and should not be expected to be. Their expertise ends where the machine leaves.
What the first season actually looks like
Owners expect a cleared paddock to look like a paddock. In the first season it usually looks like a building site that is trying to become one, and that appearance is not a sign of failure.
Expect bare patches where piles sat, a residue layer that has not yet broken down, stumps at or near grade if nothing was excavated, and a flush of whatever germinates fastest on disturbed ground — which is rarely what you seeded. Judging the reclamation at three months produces the wrong conclusion in both directions.
The useful checkpoint is the end of the first full growing season, against two questions: is there competitive ground cover across most of the area, and is the woody regrowth thin enough to be handled by cutting or grazing rather than by a machine? Those two answers tell you whether the follow-up plan is working.
Deciding whether to clear at all yet
Some owners are better served by waiting. If the follow-up cannot happen — no equipment, no stock, no time in the first year — clearing now buys a season of visibility and then a denser problem.
That is a legitimate reason to phase a reclamation: clear the area you can genuinely manage this year, leave the rest, and extend once the first area is holding. It is slower, cheaper per stage, and considerably more likely to end with open ground.

How soon after clearing should I seed?
Timing depends on your climate, soil, and species, and getting it wrong wastes the seed, so it is an extension-service question rather than one this page can answer. What is general is that leaving disturbed soil bare through a growing season works against you.
Will the mulch residue stop grass establishing?
A thick layer can delay establishment; a thin one often helps by protecting the surface. Depth is the variable, and it is something you can specify before the work rather than discover afterwards.
Do I have to remove the stumps for pasture?
Not usually for grazing, where roots below grade are largely irrelevant. It matters if you intend to cultivate, mow closely with equipment that would strike them, or work the ground mechanically.
Is one clearing pass ever enough?
Occasionally, where the growth does not resprout and ground cover establishes strongly. It is not the way to plan, because the cost of being wrong is a denser stand than you started with.
