Where cleared material goes

On a full-removal job the material, not the cutting, is usually the largest cost. Five destinations exist, they cost very different amounts, and one of them should not be on the list.

The short answer

Volume, not weight, drives handling cost. Cut woody growth occupies several times the space it did standing, and everything downstream — loading, transport, tipping — is priced against that expanded volume.

Leaving material in place is free because nothing is handled. Every other route introduces a handling operation, and each additional handling multiplies the cost.

Processing on site — chipping or grinding into a usable product — converts a disposal cost into a material you own, which is a good outcome only if you have a use for it and somewhere to put it.

Burying material on a site where anything will be founded, driven, or cultivated is not a disposal route. It defers a structural problem and makes it invisible.

Why volume expansion drives the number

This is the mechanism behind most of the price gap between quotes, and it is rarely explained.

Standing growth is dense and vertical. Cut growth is a tangle of branches with air between them, occupying substantially more space than the stems did. Haulage is billed by the load, and a load is a volume, so the expansion is paid for directly.

Processing reduces the volume — that is largely what a chipper or a grinder is for. Chipping before hauling can therefore reduce the number of loads enough to pay for the processing, which is why a contractor may propose it even when you have no use for chip.

The corollary is that a quote which includes haulage but no processing is either accepting many loads or has not thought about it. Asking how many loads they expect is a good way to find out which.

Piles, and the obligation they create

Piling is cheap, quick, and the route most likely to be regretted, so it is worth being specific about what a pile is.

A large pile of woody material is a fire load, and it is one that dries out and becomes more flammable over the first year rather than less. It is habitat, which is a benefit if that is your intention and a problem if it is beside a building. It settles and slumps, occupying a different footprint than it did on the day.

It also does not go away on any useful timescale. Woody material in a heap with limited soil contact decays slowly, and the pile that was going to be dealt with next year is frequently still there in five.

Piling is a good answer when it is deliberate: a habitat pile sited away from structures, or a staging heap that will genuinely be processed. It is a poor answer when it is the default.

Burning, and why this site will not tell you it is available

Burning is frequently proposed because it is the cheapest way to reduce volume, and it is the option with the least predictable availability.

Whether open burning of cleared vegetation may occur depends on the state, the county, sometimes the municipality, the season, current fire danger, air quality conditions, and often a specific authorisation. Those conditions change during a project, so a plan that depends on burning can become unavailable after the material is already piled.

This platform does not tell you whether burning is available at your location. Nobody can responsibly do that from a distance. The route is your local fire authority and state environmental agency, and the answer should be obtained before the disposal method is chosen rather than after.

Chip and mulch as a material you own

The one route that converts a cost into an asset deserves a realistic assessment rather than an enthusiastic one.

Chip has genuine uses: paths, suppression around plantings, surfacing for low-traffic areas, and a soil amendment once composted. It also arrives in quantity, needs somewhere to sit, and fresh chip is not a finished product — it is high-carbon material that behaves differently from composted mulch.

The honest test is whether you have a use for the volume that will actually be produced, and space for the surplus. A landowner with paths to surface and beds to mulch does well from on-site chipping. One with nowhere to put it has bought a pile with a nicer name.

  • If piles stay, where exactly, and how far from the buildings?
  • Would chipping reduce the load count enough to pay for itself here?

Questions people actually ask

Why is one quote so much cheaper than the others?

Most often because the material is staying and in the others it is leaving. That is a legitimate difference in scope rather than a discount. Ask each bidder what happens to the material and the gap usually explains itself.

Can I keep the wood for firewood?

Often yes, and it is worth asking, because separating usable stems is a small amount of extra handling. Be realistic about volume and about the work involved in processing it — a stack of unsplit rounds is a project rather than a fuel supply.

Is chipping better than hauling?

It is cheaper and it keeps the material. Whether that is better depends on whether the chip is useful to you. If it is not, you have converted a disposal cost into a storage problem, which is only an improvement on paper.

What happens to material taken off site?

It should go to a facility licensed to receive it, and there should be a record. Ask where, and ask for the receipt. Material that leaves cheaply and without documentation may not have gone anywhere legitimate, and that can become your problem.

Answer the five questions every quote depends on — what is growing, where the material goes, how deep removal has to reach, whether equipment can get in, and what the land is for afterwards. Then send one properly described project to the right kind of contractor.
