Mulch, chip, burn, or haul?

Everything you cut has to go somewhere. Which of the four routes it takes is frequently the single biggest number in the project, and it is the one most often left out of the conversation.

The short answer

Four routes: leave it reduced on the ground, chip it, burn it where lawful and managed, or haul it away. Cost rises roughly in that order, and so does how clean the ground is afterwards.

The decision follows from end use. Ground that will be built on or cultivated cannot keep the material. Ground that will be grazed, walked, hunted, or left to recover usually can, and often benefits from it.

Never plan a project on the assumption that burning will be available.

Why leaving it is usually the default — and often the right one

Material left on the ground avoids gathering, loading, trucking, and disposal. That is four cost centres removed, which is why it is the cheapest route by a wide margin.

It also has genuine benefits. The layer shades the soil and slows the return of what you just cut. It intercepts rainfall and holds soil in place, which matters on any slope. It returns organic matter to the ground as it breaks down.

It is only a problem when it is in the way — and whether it is in the way depends entirely on the end use.

Burning is not a plan

Burning appears to be the cheap disposal route, and it is frequently unavailable exactly when it is needed.

Whether you may burn openly depends on the state, the county, the municipality, the season, the current fire danger, and sometimes the day’s weather. Restrictions are commonly imposed at short notice. Permits may be required, may carry conditions about weather and attendance, and may not be issued at all in some jurisdictions.

So burning can be a bonus if it turns out to be available and someone competent is managing it. It cannot be the assumption a quote is built on, because a project scheduled around a burn that is then prohibited has no disposal plan at all.

What hauling actually costs

Hauling is three costs, and quotes sometimes include only some of them.

There is loading, which needs a machine and an operator. There is trucking, which depends on distance and how many loads the volume produces. And there is the disposal fee at the far end, which varies by facility and by material type — and mixed material with soil in it is priced worse than clean wood.

Ask which of the three the quote covers. "Haul-off included" that turns out to exclude the tipping fee is a common and expensive surprise.

Chipping sits in the middle

Chipping adds a machine and someone to feed it, and produces a more uniform product than material reduced where it falls.

That product can be spread, piled, used elsewhere on the property, or occasionally sold or given away depending on local demand. It is also easier to move than unprocessed brush, which makes partial removal practical in a way it otherwise is not.

It is slower than in-place reduction and needs the material brought to the machine, which is why it suits sites where the material is already going to be gathered.

Deciding

Work down this list and stop at the first that applies.

  • Will anything be built, cultivated, or graded here? Then the material has to go — haul it.
  • Is the site too constrained to store residue? Then haul it.
  • Is the ground sloped or near water? Leaving cover in place is usually the safer choice.
  • Do you want a usable product rather than a rough layer? Chip it.
  • Is none of the above true? Leave it in place and spend the money elsewhere.

How deep is the layer after mulching?

It depends entirely on how much was standing. Light brush leaves very little; a dense stand leaves a great deal more. Ask the contractor for their expectation on your specific ground before deciding whether it is acceptable.

Can I sell or give away the chips?

Sometimes, depending on local demand and on how clean the material is. It is worth asking locally, but treat it as a possible bonus rather than a way to fund the project.
