The short answer
The layer physically covers the soil surface, which suppresses light-dependent germination, moderates surface temperature, reduces evaporation, and intercepts rainfall before it strikes bare soil.
Those effects are useful where you want soil protected and unwanted growth suppressed, and unhelpful where you want seed to establish quickly or ground to be firm and clean underfoot.
Depth is the variable that matters most, and it is partly controllable. More passes produce a finer, more evenly spread layer; fewer produce coarser material in a thicker mat.
The layer decomposes over years rather than months, and while it does it consumes nitrogen at the soil surface — which matters for seeding and does not matter for a trail.

Why depth matters more than presence
A thin scattering and a thick mat behave completely differently, and the difference is largely determined by how much growth there was.
A parcel of light brush produces a modest layer that weathers into the soil surface within a season or two. A parcel of dense mixed woods produces a substantial mat, because all of that standing volume is still on site — it has changed shape rather than quantity.
A thick layer holds moisture at the surface, stays cool, and physically prevents small seeds reaching soil. It also takes considerably longer to break down. None of that is a defect; it is the arithmetic of leaving everything where it grew.
Where depth matters to you, discuss it before work starts. Extra passes cost time and produce a finer, flatter result. Spreading rather than leaving windrows is also a choice the operator makes.
The nitrogen question, stated carefully
This comes up constantly and is usually either overstated or dismissed.
Woody material is high in carbon relative to nitrogen. Micro-organisms breaking it down draw nitrogen from their immediate surroundings to do so, which can temporarily reduce what is available at the interface between the residue and the soil.
The important qualifier is that this happens where the material meets the soil, not throughout the soil profile. Established plants with roots below that zone are largely unaffected. Small seeds germinating right at the interface are affected, which is precisely the pasture-establishment case.
The practical implication is about timing and seedbed rather than about soil damage. Whether your ground needs any amendment is a soil-testing question for your local extension service, not something that can be determined from a distance.
What the layer looks like over time
Owners are often surprised by the first year, then satisfied by the third, and knowing the trajectory helps.
Immediately after work the site looks raw: pale wood fragments, visible stem ends, an uneven surface. Within a season the material darkens, settles, and knits together, and the site reads as ground rather than as debris.
Over subsequent seasons the layer thins as it decomposes, and whatever the seed bank holds begins coming through it. The suppression effect is real but temporary, which is why mulching is not a substitute for a maintenance plan.
The second growing season is the honest test of the whole project, and it is when the difference between clearing and management becomes visible.
Working machinery over your own residue
One underrated property of the layer is what it does for the machine that made it, and for the soil underneath.
A carrier working across processed material is driving on a cushion rather than directly on soil. Load is spread, the tracks are separated from the surface, and both rutting and compaction are reduced compared with the same machine on bare ground.
This is part of why in-place processing is gentler on soil than conventional clearing. Conventional clearing strips the surface and then runs loaded vehicles across what is left, which is the least forgiving combination available.
The protection is real but finite. A thin layer over saturated ground under a heavy machine will still rut, and the residue itself gets pressed into the soil where that happens. On ground you care about, the layer is a help rather than a licence to work in any conditions.

Can I plant grass straight into the residue?
You can broadcast into it, and establishment is usually poorer than into a prepared surface because seed struggles to reach soil. A thinner, finer layer helps considerably. Where pasture is the goal, discuss the finish before work rather than after.
How long before the layer disappears?
Years rather than months, varying with climate, material size, and soil biology across a range too wide for a single figure to be useful. It thins steadily rather than vanishing at a point.
Does the layer stop the brush coming back?
It suppresses germination from seed while it is thick, which helps. It does nothing about resprouting from root systems that are still alive underneath, and that is the main route by which cleared brush returns.
Is the residue a fire risk?
Woody material is fuel, and a deep layer near a structure adds to the fuel load there. Keeping it back from buildings is a reasonable request. What matters for your specific situation depends on local conditions and any programme requirements that apply.
