Clearing an access route that has to work

A cleared line through the trees is not an access road. What makes it usable is geometry and water management, and both are decided before anything is cut.

The short answer

Decide the largest vehicle that will use the route, then work backwards. Its width, its turning circle, its ground clearance, and its weight when loaded set every dimension of the corridor.

Cleared width has to exceed running width substantially, because a corridor cut to the vehicle’s dimensions has no margin for the encroachment that follows within two seasons.

Water decides whether the route survives. A track that concentrates runoff along its length erodes into a channel; one that sheds water sideways at intervals does not. That is a design decision made before clearing, not a repair made after.

Clearing produces a corridor. Making it trafficable in wet weather is separate work, and on many sites it costs more than the clearing did.

Working backwards from the vehicle

Every dimension in the corridor derives from one decision, and getting that decision wrong is expensive to correct because the trees are already gone.

Why water, not soil, destroys tracks

Almost every failed access route has failed the same way, and it is a drainage failure rather than a construction one.

A track running down a slope becomes the lowest, most compacted line available to water. Runoff collects along it, gains velocity with every metre it travels unimpeded, and begins moving material. Once a channel starts, it deepens rapidly because the concentrated flow accelerates.

The fix is to prevent water travelling far along the route: crossfall so it leaves sideways, and interruptions at intervals so anything that does run gets diverted off. Both are set by the shape of the route, which means they are decided when the alignment is chosen.

This is why alignment matters more than surfacing. A well-aligned unsurfaced track outlasts a badly aligned surfaced one.

How much wider than the vehicle

Corridors close in from the sides and from above, and the rate depends on what is growing beside them.

Side growth responds to the sudden light at a new corridor edge with vigorous lateral extension — the edge effect that makes a newly cut trail look narrower every year. Overhead is worse, because branches reach into the gap and sag under their own weight and under snow or rain load.

The practical consequence is that a corridor cut to exactly the width you need will not be that width for long, and reopening it costs another mobilisation. Cutting wider than needed and cutting the overhead generously is cheaper than returning.

How much wider is a judgement about growth rate and how much maintenance you intend to do. The useful question to ask a contractor is what they have seen close in fastest locally.

Crossings, and where a project stops being clearing

A route that has to cross a drainage line, an intermittent channel, or a wet area has left clearing territory.

Crossings are structures. They need to pass the flow that actually arrives in a heavy event, and undersizing one means it blocks, backs up, and takes the track with it. Depending on the watercourse and the jurisdiction, a crossing may also require authorisation before any work occurs.

Whether a particular channel or wet area is regulated is not something this platform can determine, and it is not something a clearing contractor can determine either. It is settled with the relevant state and federal agencies before ground is disturbed.

Questions people actually ask

Can a clearing contractor build the road as well?

Some can, because they own earthmoving equipment as well as cutting equipment. Many cannot, and that is not a shortcoming. Ask which parts they are quoting: cutting the corridor, shaping it, and surfacing it are three different activities.

How wide should a residential access route be?

Wide enough for the largest vehicle plus margin, plus allowance for encroachment, plus whatever local requirements apply for emergency access. Those local requirements are the part worth checking first, because they may be the binding constraint.

Will mulching the corridor be enough?

It clears the standing growth and leaves the roots and a residue layer. For an occasional-use track over firm ground that may be entirely sufficient. For a route carrying loaded vehicles in wet weather, it is the first step rather than the whole job.

Why does my existing track wash out every year?

Almost always because water travels along it rather than off it. Look at whether the surface sheds sideways and whether anything interrupts flow at intervals. Adding surface material to a track with no drainage strategy usually just moves more expensive material downhill.
