Clearing for a driveway or access road

Everything a trail needs, plus the requirement to carry load. That single addition changes the below-grade work, the drainage, and the trades involved.

The short answer

The corridor work is the same as a trail. The difference is that a driveway carries repeated load, which means stumps and roots have to come out of the running line, the base has to be built rather than just cleared, and drainage is not optional.

It is a two-trade project: clearing the corridor, then earthwork to build a surface that lasts.

What changes the answer

Route first, again

As with a trail, layout saves more than efficiency during construction ever will — but the constraints are tighter.

A driveway has a maximum workable grade if vehicles are going to use it in all conditions, has to accommodate turning for the largest vehicle expected, and has to connect to the public road at a point that is safe and, frequently, permitted.

Walk it, flag it, and check the connection point with your local road authority before committing. Access permits and sight-distance requirements are common and are set locally.

The running line has to be grubbed

This is the substantive difference from a trail.

Root mass under a trafficked surface decays and the ground settles unevenly, which is how a new drive develops dips within a couple of years. Removing it from the running line — not from the whole corridor, just the part carrying load — is what prevents that.

Ask for below-grade removal specified to the running width plus a margin, and leave the ground beside it alone. That distinction is a real saving on a long drive.

Drainage decides the lifespan

Water is what destroys driveways, and it does so from three directions.

Water running along the surface erodes it. Water sitting in the base softens it, and a soft base fails under load. Water crossing the route without a proper crossing washes the drive out at that point.

A drive that is crowned or cross-sloped to shed water, with ditches or drains alongside and proper crossings where water passes, lasts. One that is simply cleared and levelled does not.

The base is the drive

What you can see is the surface. What determines whether it holds is underneath.

A base built on soil with root mass still in it, or on ground that was not compacted, fails regardless of what is spread on top. Adding more surface material to a failing drive is the most common and least effective repair there is.

Ask what the base construction is, what compaction is specified, and how it is verified. That is an earthwork conversation, not a clearing one.

Two trades, in sequence

Clearing the corridor and building the road are different jobs. Some contractors do both; many do not.

Where they are separate, agree the handover: what condition the corridor is in when the clearing contractor leaves, and what the earthwork contractor expects to receive. Corridor cleared to width with the running line grubbed is a clear specification. "Cleared" is not.
