Tracked or wheeled: what the undercarriage changes

The attachment gets the attention and the undercarriage decides the outcome. Whether a carrier runs on tracks or tyres governs how much it marks your ground, what it can climb, and whether a wet week stops the job.

The short answer

Tracks spread weight over a much larger contact area than tyres, so a tracked machine of the same weight presses less heavily into the ground. That is why tracked carriers dominate work on soft, uneven, or sloping land.

Tyres are faster between work areas, kinder to hard surfaces, and simpler to move between jobs. On firm dry ground with a long internal travel distance, a wheeled machine can be the more productive choice.

The decision is rarely about capability in the abstract. It is about your specific ground on the specific week the work happens, and about which surfaces the machine has to cross to get there.

Neither type removes the possibility of damage. A tracked machine turning repeatedly in one place will still tear a surface, and an owner who cares about the finish should be talking about turning discipline and travel routes rather than only about the undercarriage.

The rain question, which is the one that actually decides schedules

Most disputes about undercarriage type are really disputes about weather. A wheeled machine on ground that has taken three days of rain does not underperform; it stops, and the crew either waits or damages the site.

That is a scheduling risk, and it is worth surfacing before the work is booked rather than on the morning. Ask what the contractor does if the ground is too wet on the agreed date, and whether waiting costs you anything.

Owners with heavy soils and no urgency often get a better result by scheduling for the driest part of their year, which is a decision available to them and to nobody else.

What tracks do to a lawn, and what limits it

On a residential lot the concern is usually the finished appearance rather than soil physics. Tracks distribute weight well and still mark grass, because marking comes from shear as much as pressure — the machine turning, not the machine standing.

Practical mitigations exist and are worth asking about: planning travel so the machine crosses sensitive ground once rather than repeatedly, working from a hard standing where one exists, and using mats over the few metres that matter most.

What none of that achieves is an unmarked lawn after a full day of machine work. An owner who needs that outcome is really asking for a smaller machine, hand work, or a different season.

Slope, and the difference between up and across

Working up and down a slope and working across it are different problems. Across-slope work loads one side of the undercarriage and is where machines slip and, in the worst case, tip.

This is an operator and safety question rather than an owner decision, and it belongs in the conversation about how the site will be worked rather than in a specification. The useful owner contribution is accurate information: where the steep ground is, where it stays wet, and where the rock is close to the surface.

When the only available contractor has the wrong machine

This is the practical situation most owners actually face. In many areas the choice is not between two carrier types but between one contractor who is available and none.

The honest options are narrower than they look. You can wait for conditions that suit the machine on offer, which is often the best answer and costs nothing but time. You can pay for ground protection so an unsuitable machine can work without wrecking the surface. You can reduce the scope to the areas where the machine is adequate and leave the rest. Or you can widen the search area and accept a higher mobilisation from further away.

What does not work is proceeding as though the mismatch is not there. A wheeled machine on saturated clay will either stop or rut, and both outcomes were predictable on the morning it arrived.

Are tracked machines always better for clearing?

They are better suited to soft, uneven, and sloping ground, which describes a great deal of clearing work. On firm dry sites with long travel distances a wheeled carrier can be more productive, so the answer is conditional rather than general.

Will rubber tracks protect my lawn?

They reduce marking compared with steel and they do not eliminate it. Most visible damage comes from turning and repeated passes rather than from standing weight, so travel planning matters as much as the track material.

Can a machine work on ground that is too wet?

Sometimes, at a cost to the ground. The relevant question is not whether it is possible but whether the surface damage and compaction are acceptable to you, since you own the result long after the crew has left.

Should I specify the carrier type in my scope?

Generally no. Specify the constraint — the ground stays wet, the lawn matters, there is a slope on the north side — and let the contractor select equipment. Specifying a solution can rule out a better one.
