The clearing is straightforward. Where the trail goes and where the water goes decide whether it is still usable in three years.

The short answer

Route selection saves more money than anything that happens during the clearing. A trail that contours a slope, avoids the wet corner, and sheds water off its surface costs less to build and far less to maintain.

Width follows use. Drainage follows slope. Both are specifications you set before anyone quotes.

Walk the route before you mark it

The single most valuable hour of a trail project is spent on foot.

Look for the ground that is naturally easier: gentler grades, drier soil, fewer large stems, no crossing. A route that takes a longer line across easier ground is usually cheaper to build, more usable in wet weather, and dramatically cheaper to maintain than the direct line.

Flag it, walk it again, and adjust. Contractors quote a marked route far more accurately than a described one.

Never run straight up the slope

A trail running with the fall line becomes a channel. Water runs along it, gathers speed, and cuts.

Contouring across the slope with a slight grade keeps water crossing the trail rather than running down it. Where a climb is unavoidable, switchbacks and grade breaks do the same job.

A trail that ignores this needs rebuilding rather than maintaining, and the rebuild costs more than the original.

Width and clearance are two numbers

Specify both, because a corridor wide enough on the ground can still be unusable if nobody cut the overhanging limbs.

Walking, ATV, tractor, and truck each need a different cleared width, and larger vehicles also need turning space and passing places. Overhead clearance has to account for what is actually travelling — a trailer is taller than a machine.

Wider corridors also admit more light, which speeds regrowth from the edges. There is a genuine trade-off between clearing wide enough to last and narrow enough to stay shaded.

Crossings, and what they may involve

Where a trail crosses water or a drainage line, the crossing is separate construction with its own considerations.

Depending on the state, the county, and what is being crossed, work in or near a watercourse may require authorisation from a state environmental agency or a federal agency. That is not something this site or a contractor can determine for your property.

If your route crosses water, ask your state environmental agency and the relevant U.S. Army Corps of Engineers district office before building it. Or reroute — a longer trail with no crossing is often the cheaper project.

What the surface is left as

There is a difference between a cleared corridor and a built trail, and it should be stated in the quote.

A cleared corridor is vegetation removed. A built trail has a shaped running surface that sheds water. A surfaced trail has material brought in. Each is a different scope and a different price.

For a walking trail, cleared may be enough. For anything carrying vehicles regularly, a shaped surface with drainage is what makes it last.
