Describing density so a quote means something
Acreage tells a contractor almost nothing. What they need is how much material stands on it, and an owner who can describe that in three or four concrete measures will receive quotes that differ for real reasons rather than for guesswork.

The short answer
Four measures carry most of the information: the spread of stem diameters, how close the stems stand, how tall the growth is, and whether the canopy is closed or broken. Together they describe fibre volume, which is what machine hours are actually spent on.
You can gather all four without equipment. Pace out a square, count what is inside it, measure the widest few stems with a tape around the trunk, and photograph the same square from two angles. Repeat in three or four places that look different from each other.
The point is representativeness rather than precision. A contractor who knows that a third of your parcel is dense small stems and two thirds is open with scattered larger trees can price it. One who knows only "ten acres, overgrown" is guessing, and will price the guess defensively.
What you must not do is convert your observations into claims you cannot support — a species identification you are unsure of, a timber volume, or an age. A wrong confident number is worse than an honest description.
What changes the answer
- Whether the growth is uniform or varies sharply across the parcel
- How much of the volume sits in stems above roughly wrist thickness
- Whether there is a closed canopy above the understorey
- How much old debris, wire, or rubbish is mixed into the growth
- How accessible the interior of the parcel is on foot
The four measures, and how to take them
None of this requires anything you do not already own. A tape measure, a phone, and an afternoon cover it.

Describing tree size without pretending to survey timber
Owners are routinely asked how big the trees are and answer with an impression. A tape around the trunk at roughly chest height turns the impression into a measurement, and that is as far as you should go.
Report the measurement you took and where you took it. Do not convert it into board feet, a timber value, an age, or a species-specific claim unless you actually know. If merchantable timber is a real possibility, that is a question for a forester rather than for a clearing contractor, and your state forestry agency is the usual starting point for a referral.
The useful framing for a clearing quote is banding: mostly under wrist thickness, a mix up to thigh thickness, a scattering above that. Bands are honest, they are checkable, and they map onto what a machine finds easy or hard.
Sampling a parcel you cannot walk
On larger acreage, walking the interior may be genuinely impossible. Sampling from the perimeter and from any internal lane still produces useful information, provided you say that is what you did.
Note where you could not reach and why. "I could not get past the first hundred feet on the north side" is valuable to a contractor, because it tells them both about the vegetation and about the access.
Aerial imagery in any consumer mapping tool shows canopy extent and open areas well, and shows understorey not at all. It is a good way to divide a parcel into zones to sample, and a poor way to judge what is under the trees.
What to put in the email
A short structured message produces markedly better responses than a paragraph of description, and it lets several contractors quote comparably.
- Total area, and how you arrived at the figure
- Rough proportions of the parcel by density zone
- Stem diameter bands you measured, with where you measured them
- Growth height, with a photograph containing a reference object
- Whether the canopy is closed, broken, or absent in each zone
- Known debris, wire, fencing, or dumped material
- Areas you could not reach, and why
- What you want the ground to be capable of afterwards
The limits of what you can establish
Nothing you can see from the surface tells you what is below it. Buried debris, old fill, rock close to grade, and root plate size are all invisible until something disturbs them.
Nor can you establish whether a particular species will resprout on your ground, how quickly, or how vigorously — that varies with species, season, and site conditions, and university extension services in your state are the appropriate source for local vegetation guidance.
Being explicit about what you do not know is part of the documentation. It tells a contractor where to be careful and stops your description being read as a warranty.

Questions people actually ask
How accurate does my density estimate need to be?
Representative rather than precise. Getting the proportions roughly right across the parcel matters far more than counting exactly, because contractors are trying to size the job rather than audit your arithmetic.
Should I identify species?
Only where you are confident. A wrong identification can change a recommendation for the worse. Photographs let a contractor or an extension service identify what matters without you having to guess.
Can a contractor quote from photographs alone?
Many will give an indicative range and most will want to walk anything substantial before committing. Good photographs and measurements shorten that visit and make the resulting number more reliable.
Is aerial imagery good enough?
It is useful for area, canopy extent, and dividing the parcel into zones. It shows nothing about what stands under a canopy, which is usually where the cost is, so it cannot replace ground observation.
