Middle Tennessee is limestone country, and that single fact shapes more clearing projects here than anything else. Soil depth over rock varies from adequate to almost nothing across a single parcel, and below-grade work is unpredictable in a way it is not in deep-soil regions.
The second defining feature is eastern red cedar. It colonises ground that stops being grazed or mowed, and on the shallow soils of the Central Basin it does so quickly and thickly.

Eastern red cedar dominates on shallow, dry sites across the Central Basin, often in dense even-aged stands on ground that came out of agricultural use. It cuts easily but the stands are thick, so the work is measured in density rather than stem size.
Mixed hardwood on deeper soils, in stream corridors, and on the Highland Rim, with substantially larger stems than the cedar ground.
Bush honeysuckle and privet are widespread in the understory across the region, and both resprout vigorously after cutting.
