Equipment access: measure before you quote
A gate measurement can change a clearing price more than an acre does. Access does not add cost; it changes which machine can work at all, and that changes the production rate for the whole job.

The short answer
Machine size drives production rate, and production rate drives cost. Anything that caps machine size — a gate, a bridge, a low span, a soft crossing, a turn — caps the rate and lengthens the job.
Measuring five or six things before you request quotes makes those quotes considerably more accurate, and stops the price changing on the first morning.
What changes the answer
- The narrowest point anywhere on the route in
- Overhead clearance along the whole route, not just at the entrance
- Ground conditions on the route and in the work area
- Any crossing, and whether its capacity is known
- Where a transporter can turn around
- What is within reach of the working area
The measurements worth taking
None of these needs equipment beyond a tape measure and half an hour, and they materially improve every quote you receive.
- Narrowest width on the route in — usually a gate, a bridge, or a gap between buildings
- Lowest overhead clearance — lines, branches, a span, a barn doorway
- Length and surface of the route from the public road
- Any crossing: bridge, culvert, ford, or soft spot
- Turnaround space for a truck and trailer
- Distance from where a transporter can unload to the working area
- Slope on the route and in the work area
Why the gate is the whole conversation
Machines come in size classes, and each class has a width. A route that admits a large machine admits a fast job; a route that admits only a small one admits a slow job on the same acreage.
That is not a surcharge — it is a different production rate applied to the same work. A contractor who knows the constraint prices the right machine. One who does not may arrive with equipment that cannot get in, which costs a mobilisation and delays everything.
If a gate can be temporarily removed, or a section of fence taken down and reinstated, say so. It can change the machine class and be worth far more than the cost of the fencing work.
Overhead is measured along the whole route
People check the entrance and forget the rest.
Machines travel on trailers, and a loaded trailer is tall. Low branches, a barn doorway, a bridge deck, or a line crossing the drive can each stop a delivery that the gate width would have allowed.
Utility lines are the case that matters most. Clearance requirements around energised lines are set by the utility and by safety regulation, not by the contractor, and working near them may require the utility to be involved. If lines cross the route or the work area, contact the utility before scheduling.
Ground conditions decide the season
Access is not only about geometry. A route that is fine in August may be impassable in March.
Heavy machinery on soft ground ruts, and ruts are damage you may have to repair. A contractor who says they would rather work your ground in a particular season is usually protecting your property as much as their schedule.
Agree in advance what happens if the ground is unworkable on the scheduled day — who bears the cost of the wasted mobilisation, and how rescheduling works.
Crossings need real answers
A bridge or culvert on the access route is a load question, and "it has always been fine" is not a load rating.
Farm bridges and private culverts frequently have no documented capacity. A machine on a trailer is a concentrated load considerably heavier than a pickup. If the route crosses one, raise it early — the contractor may need to unload before the crossing and walk the machine over, which is a real cost but a smaller one than a collapsed culvert.
What is within reach matters too
Access is about getting in. Working room is about what happens once the machine is there.
Equipment that reduces material in place throws debris. Structures, vehicles, glass, livestock, and neighbouring property within range change the method along that edge regardless of what is used elsewhere. Fencing, wellheads, septic fields, and irrigation are all things a machine can damage without anyone intending it.
Walk the working area and note what is close. It is a five-minute exercise that prevents most of the incidental damage on clearing jobs.

What width does a clearing machine need?
It depends entirely on the machine class, and that is precisely why the measurement matters — the width you have determines which class can come. Measure your narrowest point and give the number to the contractor rather than asking them to guess.
Does bad access always cost more?
It usually does, because it caps machine size and therefore production rate. Sometimes it costs a great deal more, because it forces a much smaller machine onto work a large one would have finished quickly.
Can I widen access temporarily?
Often, and it is frequently worth it. Removing a gate or a fence section and reinstating it afterwards can change the machine class, and the saving on the clearing can exceed the fencing cost several times over.
Who pays if equipment damages my drive or gate?
Agree that before work starts, in writing. Some damage is unavoidable when heavy machinery uses a residential drive, and the time to establish expectations is before rather than after.
